Research facilities will be predominantly housed in the Inselspital area (University Hospital of Bern, site plan) and adjacent sites belonging to the University of Bern (site plan). Existing laboratory facilities dedicated to the ACE cover 40 m2, of dry and wet laboratory space, where the wet laboratory can also serve as a dark room for flow visualization studies. Additionally, there is 50 m2 of shared laboratory space, with facilities for small animal surgery and biochemical experiments.
The wet laboratory contains a computer controlled cardiovascular simulator that is designed for heart valve studies and can incorporate prototypes of artificial mitral and aortic valves. It is equipped with instrumentation for pressure and flow measurements and flow visualization. The simulator can also be converted for other types of studies, especially the evaluation of ventricular assist devices. Various VADs and their controllers are readily available in the lab and an exchange of such equipment between hospital medicine and laboratory is typical.
As partner in the network of the Inselspital, the University of Bern, the animal hospital and the local Universities of Applied Sciences, ACE also has access to:
