Monika Kugemann holds a master’s degree in Theater and Media from Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen/Nürnberg, Germany, and a second master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Point Park University, Pittsburgh, USA. During her journalism studies she interned at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, researching and writing news articles for the features department. Her stay in North America inspired her PhD thesis on the correlation of cultural identity in migration processes. Under the title „In-Between Cultural Heritage: Identity and the Integration Process“, she investigated cultural expressions and their interpretation through 19th century print media as constituents of immigrant identity in the United States. She also holds a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Healthcare Management by the University of Bern.

Monika Kugemann has worked in the marketing department of Siemens Bangalore (2005), where she developed new methods for improving social networking opportunities between employees. She has served in the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) in the Publications and Dissemination unit (2008), where she assisted the UNRISD Press Office in media outreach support and website, intranet development and worked to increase the visibility of UNRISD’s research in academia and civil society. She has worked in the International Affairs Office of the University of Basel (2009-2011) and has served as a media spokesperson at the Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, and later Insel Gruppe (2011-2019). In June 2019 she joined the ARTORG Center of the University of Bern as Communications Lead. Since 2021 she also is responsible for communications at the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (CAIM).
