Spatial hearing with bilateral cochlear implant

The coding strategy of cochlear implant audio processors highly affects the hearing quality of cochlear implant (CI) users. Current coding models date back two decades and fall short of normal-hearing listeners’ ability to locate sound sources. The Hearing Research Lab (HRL) of the Inselspital and ARTORG Center has now investigated if a temporal fine structure (TFS) coding approach can improve spatial hearing for bilateral CI users.

Malavika Nambiar wins ESBiomech Poster Award

With her poster presentation “Biomechanical simulation platform for patient specific refractive interventions” Malavika Harikrishnan Nambiar, doctoral student at the Computational Bioengineering group, has won this year`s poster award of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB). Her PhD project aims at providing surgeons with a better treatment modality and developing patient-specific treatment plans that promise the best outcome for refractive surgery. The ARTORG Center was represented with nine researchers and 16 projects at the ESBiomech Congress (11-14 July 2021), including two perspective talks by Philippe Zysset, Head of Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Philippe Büchler, Head of Computational Bioengineering.

PhD thesis defense Ye Tang

Congratulations to Ye Tang, doctoral student at the ARTORG Organs-on-Chip Laboratory and the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM), for her successful PhD thesis defense on 28 June 2021! Ye has investigated “Nanocellulose applications in biosensing devices” as a joint PhD project of the ARTORG Center and CSEM. Her thesis has demonstrated the potential of nanocellulose-based materials as an emerging nanomaterial to fabricate simple, cost-effective, disposable optical/electrochemical analytical devices for several (bio)sensing applications of point-of-care diagnostics.

Laura Marchal-Crespo receives Vidi grant

The Dutch Research council has awarded Laura Marchal-Crespo a Vidi grant to develop the worldwide first robotic system able to provide affordable hyper-realistic sensorimotor training that allows for a trustworthy user-friendly therapy personalization , according to the TU Delft. Laura Marchal-Crespo leads the Motor Learning and Neurorehabilitation lab at the ARTORG Center and is Associate Professor at the Delft University of Technology.

Two excellent exams and a new apprentice

Simon Lüthi receives an above-average apprenticeship diploma as a polymechanic in July and his colleague Janosch Schär concludes the mid-term of his apprenticeship with a very good result. In August, Piravin Jeyendran is to start as a new polymechanic apprentice. The ARTORG workshop Mechanical Design and Production has to date trained 13 apprentices - most of them with outstanding final grades.

Congruent information enhances motor skills training

In neurorehabilitation after stroke or brain injury, immersive virtual reality can be a valuable tool to re-train lost motor skills. To date, embodiment of a virtual avatar was hypothesized to be essential for this. Now, the ARTORG Motor Learning and Neurorehabilitation lab, in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, UniBern, has shown in a first study that congruent multisensory information might be even more important to accurately and rapidly perform motor tasks in immersive VR.

Artificial muscle implanted to assist cardiac function

In collaboration with the École Polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the ARTORG Cardiovascular Engineering group has developed a dielectric‐elastomer actuator (DEA) for the aorta to assist patients with heart failure. A first prototype has now been implanted in vivo. Bern contributed to the success of the project by providing the experimental setup, physiological understanding, and surgical expertise.

AI improves speech understanding of hearing aid users

Hearing aid or hearing implant users find it challenging to understand their conversational partner in noisy environments because current audio processors still insufficiently allow them to focus on specific sound sources. In a feasibility study, researchers from the Hearing Research Laboratory (HRL) at the University of Bern and the Inselspital are now suggesting that artificial intelligence could solve this problem.

Less Encrustation in Urinary Stents

The ARTORG Urogenital Engineering group and other members of the ENIUS consortium - the ‘European network of multidisciplinary research to improve urinary stents’ - from Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, the UK, France, Spain and Portugal have reviewed research into improving urinary stents, identifying future research lines to address encrustation in urinary implants. These include coating strategies, encrustation sensing systems, biodegradable metals, bacteriophages, non-pathogenic bacteria, peristalsis enhancers, electrical charges, ultrasound and more.
