ARTORG wins MICCAI 2020 Cataract surgery challenge

Cataract surgery is the most frequent surgery worldwide with a rising tendency. This year’s international challenge on AuTomatic Activity Recognition for catarACT Surgery hosted by MICCAI 2020 aimed to push research in increased safety and efficiency of this intervention. On 4 October 2020, a team from the ARTORG Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (AIMI) lab was ranked first among all challenge competitors with a method recognizing both surgical tools and activity from a microscope video stream.

Effects of bioprosthetic heart valves

Prosthetic heart valves are known to lead to turbulent blood flow. Just how this turbulence comes to form was now investigated for the first time by researchers from the ARTORG Cardiovascular Engineering Lab. They performed a detailed characterization of the turbulent flow downstream of a bioprosthetic aortic valve using computational simulations validated against experimental measurements of the turbulent flow field with tomographic particle image velocimetry.

SurgeonsLab wins Innosuisse Core Coaching

After its successes with Venture Kick, the spinoff of the ARTORG Image Guided Therapy lab and the Inselspital Neurosurgery Department has been awarded Core Coaching by the Swiss Innovation Agency. SurgeonsLab is developing patient-specific 4D simulations for high-precision micro-neurosurgeries such as aneurysm clipping or coiling. After a successful feasibility study with experienced neurosurgeons and residents, the startup will be using the CHF 50'000 Core Coaching funds to scale its products to an international market and follow with more user studies and clinical application trials.

Sinergia Project on Shoulder Modelling

Together with the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory at EPFL, Philippe Büchler, Computational Bioengineering at ARTORG, will be performing a comprehensive analysis of biomarkers that can predict the outcome of total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) in elderly patients. The project in collaboration with the CHUV aims at developing better prediction parameters of complications frequently associated with (TSA) due to limited bone stock available to anchor the implant, a degenerated anatomy, or restricted muscles competences.
