Researchers from the AI in Medical Imaging Lab (Raphael Sznitman) and from the Computational Bioengineering group (Philippe Büchler) have been granted two BRIDGE Discovery and one BRIDGE Proof-of-Concept grant in Autumn 2025. The grants underline our center's excellence in AI, Deep Learning and surgical technologies, rapid oncology diagnostics and refractive eye care intervention planning.

Of the five projects accepted for the first stage, ARTORG Spin-Off TightValve, a venture of the Cardiovascular Engineering Group, was one of three start-ups selected for Venture Kick's second financial and entrepreneurial support stage, receiving CHF 40,000 in funding to bring their device to hospitals and patients.

The University of Bern's ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research welcomes the announcement by EssilorLuxottica S.A., a global leader in vision care and optical innovation, of its acquisition of RetinAI AG, a spin-out founded at the ARTORG Center. The transaction marks the first major commercial exit of an ARTORG origin start up and the first ever acquisition and exit of a University of Bern medtech spin out to a global industry leader.

At this year's meeting of the Swiss, Austrian and German Societies for Biomedical Engineering, Salvatore Conticello of the CBE group was able to present his project Ultrashort Time Echo MRI Sequence to Quantify Vertebral Bone Morphology in Young Adults and won the Best Student Paper award.

The UniBE Venture Fellowships are entering their 5th round. Projects can be submitted until 11 December 2025. The program supports early-career researchers who wish to turn their scientific findings into innovative products and services with up to CHF 100,000. With these fellowships, the University of Bern promotes the transfer of innovative research into society and the economy and supports academic entrepreneurship at the University of Bern, the Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, and the University Psychiatric Services (UPD).
