AI in Interstitial Lung Disease

Over 200 diagnoses exist for the umbrella term that represent interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). These are currently determined by an expert board based on CT imaging, patient data, pulmonary function tests, and histology. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods could help aid in accurate ILD diagnosis and predict prognosis and progression in a holistic system. In a review paper, researchers from the AI in Health and Nutrition Lab and the Department of Radiology of the Inselspital have compared current approaches discussed in literature, identifying potential gaps and areas requiring further research as well as the most promising results.

On this Women in Science Day, the ARTORG Center joins the University of Bern in celebrating its female scientist community. Franca, Lubnaa and Malavika are just three examples for the invaluable contribution of female scientists in ARTORG’s varied research portfolio. They model cerebral blood flow, use machine learning for improved automated dietary assessment and aim to develop patient-specific treatment plans for refractive eye surgery. Today, they share their personal motivation for their research.

Maintaining a Mediterranean diet with your phone

Researchers at the ARTORG Center in collaboration with Oviva and with the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute (EBPI), University of Zurich, have demonstrated that an AI system on a smartphone can effectively track whether a person is adhering to a Mediterranean diet (MD). MD can decrease the risk of non-communicable disease and prevent overweight and obesity. The feasibility study of the system was just published in Nature Scientific Reports.

AI for diabetes project MELISSA launched

The EU Research Project “MELISSA: Mobile Artificial Intelligence Solution for Diabetes Adapted Care” was launched today by a consortium of 12 partners, comprising the ARTORG Center Artificial Intelligence in Health and Nutrition (AIHN) lab. AIHN is the artificial intelligence expert in the project and initiated it in collaboration with DEBIOTECH, but due to Switzerland’s non-association cannot act as official leading house.

Review of dietary smartphone apps

Accurate monitoring of macronutrient and energy intake are important to manage diabetes mellitus and obesity, leading to improved glycemic control and weight reduction, respectively. So far, the potential of smartphone apps based on artificial intelligence has not been fully exploited to fulfill this monitoring task. In a review paper, the AI in Health and Nutrition lab has explored 22 image- and video-based apps designed for dietary assessment for various application fields and end-users.

AI to prevent malnutrition in hospitals

During hospitalization, especially older patients are at risk of eating too little, leading to loss of muscle mass and higher risks of infection and mortality. The AI in Health and Nutrition lab has introduced an AI-powered system to automatically assess each patient’s energy and macronutrient intake by comparing pictures taken before and after each meal. In collaboration with the Geriatrische Klinik St. Gallen and the Inselspital, the team has assessed the systems’ performance as compared to expert estimates.

PhD thesis defense Maria Vasiloglou

The ARTORG Center congratulates Maria Vasiloglou, Artificial Intelligence in Health and Nutrition (AIHN), for successfully defending her PhD thesis on 27 October 2021! For her PhD project “Design and validation of a dietary monitoring and assessment system based on machine learning and computer vision” Maria has assessed how well image-based food apps can calculate individual nutrient intake, which input mistakes users are most prone to make, what the opinions of healthcare professionals and end-users on nutrition apps are, and how Artificial Intelligence can measure adherence to Mediterranean Diet.

User Preferences of Nutrition Apps

The Artificial Intelligence for Health and Nutrition research group (AIHN) has conducted a study of adult smartphone app users for health and diet monitoring. In collaboration with the Inselspital and CentraleSupélec, the researchers sought to explore the perspectives of end users on the features, current use, and acceptance of nutrition and diet mHealth apps with a web-based survey. Goal was to provide user insights to assist researchers and developers in building innovative dietary assessments.

I believe that multidisciplinary work is fundamental to create a complete system that meets user needs, says Maria Vasiloglou, PhD student at the ARTORG AI in Health and Nutrition (AIHN) lab.
