Stergios Christodoulidis goes to CentraleSupélec

ARTORG Center Postdoctoral researcher Stergios Christodoulidis, previously part of the Artificial Intelligence in Health and Nutrition Lab, is starting a position as an Assistant Professor in the MICS Laboratory of CentraleSupélec in Paris. There, he will be a part of the teaching activities focusing on fundamentals of artificial intelligence and its application in medicine while also conducting translational research on cancer as part of the precision medicine center PRISM.

PhD thesis defense Ya Lu

Congratulations to Ya Lu, Artificial Intelligence in Health and Nutrition lab, for successfully defending her PhD thesis “Dietary assessment based on computer vision and machine learning“ on 15 December 2020! For her project, she and the team designed and developed several high-performance and user- friendly dietary assessment approaches based on advanced computer vision and machine learning algorithms, enabling automatic estimation of calories and macronutrients for targeting meals in distinct application scenarios.

AI X-ray analysis detects Covid-19 more reliably

A team of researchers at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, and the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Research at the University of Bern has developed a new chest radiography image analysis for the detection of COVID-19. The researchers compared this artificial intelligence (AI) with standard, diagnostic annotation by radiologists. Especially for distinguishing COVID-19 from non-COVID-19 lung disease, AI provided significantly more reliable results.

Bern Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine

The University of Bern and the Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, are founding a “Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine” (CAIM) that combines cutting-edge research, engineering and digitalization. Using artificial intelligence it will develop new medical technologies to enable tailor-made and efficient patient care. Partners of the new center are sitem-insel, the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine, and the University Psychiatry Services (UPD).

Single-View Dietary Assessment

Current computer vision approaches for food volume estimation require the input of multiple food images or additional information. The ARTORG Center lab for Artificial Intelligence in Health and Nutrition (AIHN) has developed a network architecture that only needs a single RGB food image to estimate food volumes and calculate nutrient information accordingly. The new approach to be presented at the 25th International Conference on Pattern Recognition in Milan, Italy, in January 2021 is the first to enable a full-pipeline single view dietary assessment.

AI to tackle hospitalized malnutrition

The nutrient intake of hospitalized patients, who are at risk of disease-related malnutrition, needs to be continuously monitored. To assist hospital care personnel with this task, researchers from ARTORG's Artificial Intelligence in Health and Nutrition in collaboration with Inselspital have developed an AI-based system to automatically assess nutrient intake of inpatients. Experimental testing of the system that applies sequential food segmentation, recognition, and estimation of the consumed food volume proves promising.
