Women in Science Day 2024

Femoral neck composition and micromechanical properties

The Musculoskeletal Biomechanics group has recently presented a multimodal framework for human compact bone characterization at the microscale, including the first high-throughput micropillar compressions of human cortical bone. The proposed bone fracture risk classification algorithm together with the output dataset of bone tissue properties can be used for the future comparison of existing methods to evaluate bone quality and better understand the mechanisms through which bone tissue is affected by aging or disease.

PhD thesis defense Alice Dudle

Congratulations to Alice Dudle for her successful PhD thesis defense on 4 December 2023! At the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics lab and as part of the SNF Sinergia project AFFIRM-CT, Alice has investigated risk parameters for fragility fractures at the hip. Her thesis “DXA- and QCT-based modeling of the human proximal femur towards improved hip fracture prediction” developed image processing methods required to include both DXA and QCT images into a hip fracture calculator.

PhD thesis defense Benjamin Voumard

Congratulations to Benjamin Voumard on successfully defending his PhD thesis at the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics lab on 27 April 2023! Under the title of “Biomechanical Investigation of Dental Implant Stability and the Aging Femoral Neck” he investigated the relationship between bone density, primary stability of the bone-implant system, and the effect of aging on the biomechanical properties of the femoral neck under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Philippe Zysset.

3D femur reconstruction from 2D DXA scans

Osteoporosis is currently diagnosed based on areal bone mineral density (aBMD) computed from 2D DXA scans. But aBMD does not take femoral geometry and density distribution into account. The Musculoskeletal Biomechanics (MSB) lab has now evaluated, in collaboration with the Department of Osteoporosis at the Inselspital, a 2D-3D DXA reconstruction software and compared femoral strength computed from the reconstructed 3D DXA and from QCT scans.

History of falls as best fall rate predictor

Although age, sex, physical performance, or comorbidities are associated with falling, these variables are not good indicators to determine the expected number of falls in older persons. A study by the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics group in collaboration with the School of Health Sciences of Physiotherapy of the HES-SO Valais has shown that out of 10 parameters believed to be related to falls in older adults, only the number of previous falls within 12 months and associated fear of falling could clearly predict future falls. These findings are relevant in the context of targeted prevention of fall-induced hip fractures which the group studies in a big multidisciplinary project.

Multifaceted future day at the ARTORG

A lot was to discover on yesterday's future day at the ARTORG Center: organs-on-chip, fluid mechanics for heart valves, biomechanics of bone (fractures), manufacturing of medtech components in the workshop. 32 schoolgirls from Bern were given the opportunity to try out these areas at our two sites on Murtenstrasse and sitem-insel. The girls showed great interest and in some cases drew parallels to other engineering disciplines such as aviation or the automotive industry.

PhD thesis defense Michael Indermaur

Congratulations to Michael Indermaur, who successfully defended his PhD project “Osteogenesis Imperfecta does not compromise the micromechanical properties of human bone extracellular matrix” on 1 June! For his research at the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics (MSB) lab in collaboration with EMPA and McGill university, Michael measured the mechanical properties of bones with “brittle bone disease” (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) at the extracellular matrix level to find out more about this rare genetic, inherited, collagen-related bone disease. With his first PhD publication “Compressive Strength of Iliac Bone ECM Is Not Reduced in Osteogenesis Imperfecta and Increases with Mineralization”, Michael has won the Best Preclinical Publication Award 2022 of the Swiss Bone and Mineral Society (SBMS).
