PhD thesis defense Denis Schenk

Congratulations to Denis Elia Schenk, who successfully defended his PhD project “Personalized Homogenized Finite Element Analysis for the Reproducible Assessment of Bone Strength” on 11 February 2022! For his research at the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics (MSB) lab, Denis has worked on methods to assess bone strength, especially in view of osteoporosis risk. His research has won the Best Student Award at the 17th Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering (CMBBE) Symposium 2021.

Predicting screw fixation strength for fractured bones

In collaboration with the AO Research Institute Davos, the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics group has assessed three different strategies to determine the stability of screws used to fix bone fractures. In an experiment with human cortical bone specimens the team could show that explicit, nonlinear micro-finite element simulations captured fixation strength most accurately.

Bone Mineralized Collagen Fiber Mechanics

Bone self-organization and deformation mechanisms are essential components for understanding and treating bone-related diseases. To explore the mechanical behavior of bone’s fundamental unit, the mineralized collagen fiber, researchers from the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK, and the ARTORG Musculoskeletal Biomechanics group have conducted a collaborative nanoscale study. Financial support was provided by the EPSRC (EP/P005756/1), the ESRF and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE).

Malavika Nambiar wins ESBiomech Poster Award

With her poster presentation “Biomechanical simulation platform for patient specific refractive interventions” Malavika Harikrishnan Nambiar, doctoral student at the Computational Bioengineering group, has won this year`s poster award of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB). Her PhD project aims at providing surgeons with a better treatment modality and developing patient-specific treatment plans that promise the best outcome for refractive surgery. The ARTORG Center was represented with nine researchers and 16 projects at the ESBiomech Congress (11-14 July 2021), including two perspective talks by Philippe Zysset, Head of Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Philippe Büchler, Head of Computational Bioengineering.

Finite Element Analysis can simulate Nucleotomy

In conclusion to a SNSF project the ARTORG Musculoskeletal Biomechanics group and their colleagues were able to show that finite element (FE) models are able to reproduce the effect of nucleotomy on the mechanical behavior of human intervertebral discs (IVD). The group measured the biomechanical behavior of three degenerated intervertebral discs in multiple loading scenarios, prior and post nucleotomy, and used MRI images to build the corresponding hyperelastic FE models.

Improved prediction of bone implant stability

As part of her dissertation, Marzieh Ovesy from the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics group at ARTORG has developed and validated an explicit finite element method that can more accurately predict the primary stability of dental or orthopedic implants for surgical planning. The computational approach can simulate the insertion and primary stability of a rigid implant in a deformable bone and account for damage at the bone-implant interface, hence paving the way for improved implant design with higher stability.
