At the 45th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society in Sydney, Australia, Amith Kamath from the Medical Image Analysis lab has won the second place of the student paper competition. The PhD student presented his research “ASTRA: Atomic Surface Transformations for Radiotherapy Quality Assurance” on 25 July 2023. His project is kindly supported by the Swiss Cancer Research Foundation.

A consortium of 21 European countries has founded the COST Action project Net4Brain, dedicated to improving brain cancer treatment through advances in early diagnosis, prognosis and patient stratification, drug development (including resistance) and big data techniques. The ARTORG Center group Medical Image Analysis (MIA) under Mauricio Reyes is the Swiss coordinating institution for the project.

From hip prostheses to artificial heart circuits: pioneering medical technology has been developed in Bern since 1963. A decisive role in this context was played by a research workshop that became a part of the University of Bern in 1989. Since 1991, federally certified master mechanic Urs Rohrer has overseen the workshop, which has changed location and institutional affiliation several times since then. Today, it belongs to the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research and is located in the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine sitem-insel.

RetinAI Medical AG, an ARTORG spin-off and leader in clinical and imaging data management software and advanced analytics using artificial intelligence, and Retina Consultants of America, the largest retina care provider in the U.S. with more than 1.7M annual patient visits and over 200 locations in the U.S , have announced a strategic partnership to develop the most extensive and AI-insight driven Real World Evidence U.S.-based database in Ophthalmology.

PeriVision is utilizing the power of artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and cloud computing to redefine eye testing and care. This spring, the company successfully closed the first tranche of a seed round, raising CHF 0.5-1.0M to further accelerate research and development, and prepare for the launch of their inaugural product in Q1 2024.

Patient-specific 3D models lead to an improved understanding of anatomical structures and a planned intervention for neurosurgical aneurysm clippings, a recent study with the ARTORG Image Guided Therapy group and the Department of Neurosurgery at the Inselspital shows. Including 3D models to patient consultation could support informed patient consent, authors conclude.

Congratulations to Eduardo Villar Ortega on successfully defending his PhD thesis at the Motor Learning and Rehabilitation group on 28 June 2023! Under the title of “Combining somatosensory stimulation with robotic training to enhance neurorehabilitation” he investigated how a robotic rehabilitation of the arm combined with whole-hand sensory electrical stimulation could impact somatosensory improvements and positively modulate brain areas related to sensory processing.

PhD candidates András Bálint and Emile Talon, from the ARTORG Hearing Research Laboratory, won the Certificate of Excellence, 3rd Best of Poster Prize at the international HEARING (High-resolution structural and functional EAR imagING, ) workshop in Monte Verità, Ascona, on 24 May 2023.

A combination of electrocochleography (ECochG) and impedance measurements might assist surgeons to detect potential trauma during cochlear implant electrode insertion. Previous problems of artefacts arising through this combination could be circumvented by robust algorithms developed by the Hearing Research Lab (HRL) of the Inselspital and ARTORG Center.

The ARTORG Center congratulates Lisette van Os on successfully defending her PhD thesis titled Immune cell migration during infection in organs-on-chip” on 27 April 2023! During her research at the ARTORG Center Organs-on-Chip Technologies Lab, Lisette developed a novel inflammation-on-chip model to study immune cell extravasation and migration during inflammatory processes, such as those taking place in lung infection. Importantly, she found that the matrix protein composition and the perfusion method of immune cells define the migrational behavior of these immune cells. Her PhD thesis was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Olivier Guenat.

Among the second round of University of Bern Venture Fellows are two Senior Researchers from the ARTORG Center: Soheila Zeinali, Organs-on-Chip Technologies, with her project to create personalized tumor-on-chip testing microenvironments for new drugs and Miguel Ariza, Computational Bioengineering, who proposes a novel treatment for Keratoconus, a progressive eye disease today treated with refractive surgery. The ARTORG Center congratulates Soheila and Miguel as well as the other Fellows: Fabian Guignard, Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Actuarial Science, and Nicolas Melin, Department of Visceral Surgery and Medicine at the Inselspital.
