Stereotactic thermoablation effective treatment alternative for colorectal cancer liver metastases

Treatment of colorectal cancer liver metastases has long been based on partial removal of the liver. A study involving a research team from Inselspital, University Hospital Bern, and the ARTORG IGT group, has now shown that a tissue-sparing treatment using a microwave probe, known as thermoablation, offers just as high a survival rate for colorectal cancer liver metastases as the conventional partial removal of the liver.

Celebrating the Beauty of Organoids

Exciting news from the TOR (Translational Organoid Resource) Symposium: This week DBMR researchers highlighted both the remarkable scientific potentials and the aesthetic aspect of organoids. The ARTORG congratulates Jan Schulte, a doctoral candidate from the OOC group, for winning one of the Best Organoid Picture Awards with the picture “A breath-taking kiss” (above). The image of alveolar organoids fashioned into the shape of a smile was taken as part of Jan’s research culturing patient alveolar epithelial cells as Organoids. Once expanded in-vitro, these cells can be used for controlled experimentation on the latest OOC lung-on-chip models.

AI in Interstitial Lung Disease

Over 200 diagnoses exist for the umbrella term that represent interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). These are currently determined by an expert board based on CT imaging, patient data, pulmonary function tests, and histology. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods could help aid in accurate ILD diagnosis and predict prognosis and progression in a holistic system. In a review paper, researchers from the AI in Health and Nutrition Lab and the Department of Radiology of the Inselspital have compared current approaches discussed in literature, identifying potential gaps and areas requiring further research as well as the most promising results.

The ARTORG Center congratulates Suhang You for successfully defending his PhD thesis “Segmentation and Quality Control, Understanding Confounders Leading to Failure Modes in Medical Image Analysis with Deep Learning“ on 23 May 2023! At the Medical Imaging Analysis group, Suhang has been investigating the interplay of interpretability and the performance of model segmentation and the potential of interpretability to improve model performance levels and maintain reliability.

Checking CI electrode position without radiation

In a retrospective analysis of impedance telemetry and CT data of patients undergoing cochlear implantation between 2015 and 2021, the Hearing Research Lab of the Inselspital and ARTORG Center has validated an impedance-based method for estimating electrode insertion depth. This radiation-free method could allow for anatomy-based fitting or monitoring of electrode migration and serve as a cost-effective alternative to current radiography assessment.

Congratulations to Benjamin Voumard on successfully defending his PhD thesis at the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics lab on 27 April 2023! Under the title of “Biomechanical Investigation of Dental Implant Stability and the Aging Femoral Neck” he investigated the relationship between bone density, primary stability of the bone-implant system, and the effect of aging on the biomechanical properties of the femoral neck under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Philippe Zysset.

PhD thesis defense Klaus Schürch

Congratulations to Klaus Schürch on successfully defending his PhD thesis titled Advancements in Electrocochleography: Towards Improved Reliability and Objective Assessment on 20 April 2023 at the ARTORG Center Hearing Research Lab! Klaus's research focused on developing a deep learning-based algorithm for the objective identification of intracochlear electrocochleography (ECochG) signals, with Prof. Dr. Stefan Weder (supervisor), Prof. Dr. Marco Caversaccio (co-supervisor) and Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Wimmer and PhD Dr. Christian Rummel (co-advisors). The results of his work, along with the collected data, have been published in open access to benefit other researchers.

On 20 and 27 March 2023, 32 students from the 10th grade (Sekundarstufe II, 2nd year) with an elective in MINT visited the ARTORG Center. Accompanied by their teacher, Moritz Wedell, they received a general overview of our research center and the challenges and potentials of biomedical engineering in general, before taking a deeper dive into the research groups of Image Guided Therapy, Organs-on-Chip Technologies, Gerontechnology and Rehabilitation, Cardiovascular Engineering and Medical Image Analysis.

On March 16 and 23, 42 seniors attended a special course of the Seniors University Assistive Technologies for Patients with Dementia , led by Prof. Dr. Tobias Nef, Group Head Gerontechnology and Rehabilitation at the ARTORG Center. They had the opportunity to experience these technologies in a tangible way and to learn about and discuss advantages and disadvantages.

PhD thesis defense Yannick Roesch

The ARTORG Center congratulates Yannick Rösch for successfully defending his PhD thesis titled “Efficiency of intracoronary drug infusion into myocardial microcirculation with microvascular obstruction: in vitro study with a multiscale flow model” on 21 March 2023! His project focused on assessing fluid dynamics in an in vitro multiscale benchtop model, representing the coronary circulation as well as microvascular obstruction (MVO) frequently occurring after myocardial infarction with the aim of helping to develop treatment strategies.

New in vitro lung inhalation model for toxicity assessment and treatment

Prolonged exposure to respirable toxicants can lead to severe respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and fibrosis. In-vitro human-relevant lung inhalation models can help to better predict the effect of airborne toxicants in preclinical research, as well as prove useful for development of new inhaled drugs. The ARTORG Organs-on-Chip Technologies lab has developed a new inhalation model for the distal lung, capable of mimicing the fragile and dynamic alveolar microenvironment in collaboration with AlveloliX AG, Vitrocell Systems and the Inselspital. This state-of-the-art human-relevant pre-clinical tool could significantly reduce use of animals for toxicity risk assessment and drug safety studies.
