3D femur reconstruction from 2D DXA scans

Osteoporosis is currently diagnosed based on areal bone mineral density (aBMD) computed from 2D DXA scans. But aBMD does not take femoral geometry and density distribution into account. The Musculoskeletal Biomechanics (MSB) lab has now evaluated, in collaboration with the Department of Osteoporosis at the Inselspital, a 2D-3D DXA reconstruction software and compared femoral strength computed from the reconstructed 3D DXA and from QCT scans.

Wilhelm Wimmer joins TU Munich

The Hearing Research Lab technical group head PD Dr. Wilhelm Wimmer will start a position as Assistant Professor for Experimental Audiology at the Technical University of Munich in March 2023. The ARTORG Center congratulates him on this important next career step that will offer him further possibilities to develop and refine his research interests in advanced and quantifiable diagnostics of inner ear diseases (hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo), as well as medical image processing, computational modelling, and robotics for improved hearing implant outcomes.

Women in Science Day 2023

On this Women in Science Day, the ARTORG Center joins the University of Bern in celebrating its female scientist community. Franca, Lubnaa and Malavika are just three examples for the invaluable contribution of female scientists in ARTORG’s varied research portfolio. They model cerebral blood flow, use machine learning for improved automated dietary assessment and aim to develop patient-specific treatment plans for refractive eye surgery. Today, they share their personal motivation for their research.

Bridging deep learning and clinical radiotherapy

The ARTORG Medical Image Analysis group (MIA) and the Department of Radio-Oncology of the Inselspital have developed an open-source, deep learning framework-independent Python package feasible for processing DICOM RT Structure Sets, in collaboration with Varian a Siemens Healthineers Company. “PyRaDiSe” (Python (Py), radiotherapy (Ra), DICOM-based (Di), auto-segmentation (Se)) goes beyond current 2D reconstruction, potentially supporting acceptance by healthcare professionals.

History of falls as best fall rate predictor

Although age, sex, physical performance, or comorbidities are associated with falling, these variables are not good indicators to determine the expected number of falls in older persons. A study by the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics group in collaboration with the School of Health Sciences of Physiotherapy of the HES-SO Valais has shown that out of 10 parameters believed to be related to falls in older adults, only the number of previous falls within 12 months and associated fear of falling could clearly predict future falls. These findings are relevant in the context of targeted prevention of fall-induced hip fractures which the group studies in a big multidisciplinary project.

Symposium marks ARTORG's 15th anniversary

In 2023 the ARTORG Center celebrates 15 years since its inception. The start of this anniversary year was marked on 17 January by a Scientific Symposium with the participation of the University Rector Christian Leumann, the Dean of the Medical Faculty Claudio Bassetti, and all twelve ARTORG research groups. Four keynotes by the new members of the ARTORG Scientific Advisory Board were the highlights of the event. The symposium was a great opportunity for all ARTORG members to get an overview of the other research areas, to exchange informally about methods and projects during the coffee breaks and Apéro, and to develop a vision for ARTORG’s coming years.
