Fathoming Visual Neglect

The neuropsychological attention disorder Visual Neglect can occur after brain lesions. However, it is difficult to establish a precise cause-effect correlation between the injured brain regions and the occurrence of this disorder. In a research letter in JAMA Neurology researchers from the ARTORG Center, Inselspital and Luzerner Kantonsspital now describe a patient case that could shed more light on the possible origins of the hemiplegic perception deficit.

PhD thesis defense Özhan Özen

The ARTORG Center congratulates Özhan Özen for his successful PhD thesis defense on 25 October 2021 under the title “Intelligence, Adaptation and Automation of Robotic Training for Motor Learning and Neurorehabilitation.” As a Motor Learning and Neurorehabilitation (MLN) lab member, Özhan has developed novel robotic assistance strategies to support the training of complex motor skills and, therefore, enhance neurorehabilitation.

Temporal bone properties inform robotic ear surgery

Quantitative assessment of bone density and thickness in computed-tomography images offers great potential for preoperative planning procedures in ear surgery. Together with the Departments of ENT and Neuroradiology Inselspital, the ARTORG Center has applied quantitative CT imaging to propose novel preoperative indices to identify optimal regions for screw placement and effective implant positioning.

Personalized models to predict artery restenosis

The blockage of a femoral artery can be treated by angioplasty, with the option of leaving a stent in the artery after reopening. However, a significant percentage of patients suffer from arterial restenosis, which requires an additional surgical intervention. A better understanding of the biomechanical environment responsible for restenosis would allow physicians to optimize the treatment of their patients. The ARTORG Computational Bioengineering (CBE) group has now proposed a method that has the potential calculate the patient-specific risk for restenosis using a computational model that combines conventional imaging with intra-arterial OCT imaging.

Advancing AI image interpretation for clinical use

Artificial Intelligence is used more and more extensively in image interpretation for diagnosis and treatment planning. A broad-based research team from Inselspital, Bern University Hospital and the University of Bern was able to demonstrate in a study that the current methods of qualifying AI for brain segmentation could be enhanced. Deviations as measured by means of currently used parameters do not correlate with clinically relevant changes of the radiation dose distribution. For widely supported implementation of AI based software there needs to be more focus on clinically relevant outcomes for it to provide real added value in terms of treatment quality.

Bone Mineralized Collagen Fiber Mechanics

Bone self-organization and deformation mechanisms are essential components for understanding and treating bone-related diseases. To explore the mechanical behavior of bone’s fundamental unit, the mineralized collagen fiber, researchers from the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK, and the ARTORG Musculoskeletal Biomechanics group have conducted a collaborative nanoscale study. Financial support was provided by the EPSRC (EP/P005756/1), the ESRF and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE).

Opening of NeuroTec research facility

The NeuroTec research facility was opened by Insel Gruppe, together with the University of Bern and sitem-insel, on the Insel Campus in Bern on Tuesday, 14 September 2021. NeuroTec pools the clinical knowledge of Inselspital, University Hospital Bern, and the expertise in medical technology of the University of Bern, while further expanding Bern’s leading position in neurology pioneered by Prof. Dr. Claudio Bassetti and his team.

Retinai among Top 100 Swiss startups

Retinai, a Bern-based startup specialized in software solutions for patient-specific eye care, has been recognized as one of the TOP 100 Swiss Startups for the second time. Retinai brings machine learning, computer vision and signal processing technology into ophthalmology to assist research and empower clinicians to provide precision care tailored to the individual patient. The startup had already made it to the coveted Top 100 list in 2018.

Arunima Sengupta receives BioBarriers 2021 award

Postdoctoral researcher of the Organs-on-Chip Technologies (OOC) group, Arunima Sengupta, has been awarded one of the best contributed talks at the BioBarriers 2021, the 13th International Conference on Biological Barriers, 7 and 8 September, organized by the Helmholtz-Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Saarland University. She talked about A bio-inspired breathing human alveoli-on-chip model to mimic inhalation at the virtual conference.

Bayesian Brain for Tinnitus

The Hearing Research Lab of the Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, and the ARTORG Center has developed a generative computational model for tinnitus, based on the Bayesian brain concept. The model is able to explain several perceptual tinnitus phenomena that are to date poorly understood. It can be applied for future research and treatment approaches by linking experimental observations with theoretical hypotheses.

User Preferences of Nutrition Apps

The Artificial Intelligence for Health and Nutrition research group (AIHN) has conducted a study of adult smartphone app users for health and diet monitoring. In collaboration with the Inselspital and CentraleSupélec, the researchers sought to explore the perspectives of end users on the features, current use, and acceptance of nutrition and diet mHealth apps with a web-based survey. Goal was to provide user insights to assist researchers and developers in building innovative dietary assessments.
