Less Damage in Cochlear Implant Insertion

The insertion of the electrode array is a critical step in cochlear implantation. A study by the Hearing Research Lab of the ARTORG Center and Inselspital ORL Department now shows that optimal alignment of the insertion trajectory with the scala tympani and non-constant insertion speed profiles contribute to mitigating injuries potentially optimizing patient outcomes. The study may help to provide clinical guidelines and to improve surgical tools for manual and automated cochlear implantation .

AI could soon tell you, how often to see the eye doctor

Three of the most common chronic eye conditions require regular medical check-ups and injections into the eye by ophthalmology specialists to keep looming blindness at bar. A study by the University of Bern and the Inselspital in collaboration with an AI in eye care startup now demonstrates that patients’ individual ideal frequency for these visits can quite accurately be predicted by machine learning – yielding a threefold benefit.

PhD thesis defense Thomas Kurmann

The ARTORG Center congratulates Thomas Kurmann, Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging Lab (AIMI), for successfully defending his PhD thesis on 20 May 2021! For his thesis “From Diagnosis to Surgery: Towards Artificial Intelligence based Medical Assistants”, Thomas Kurmann has investigated four image-based AI assistants – two for ophthalmology and two for laparascopy, both fields that rely extensively on medical imaging and are ideally suited for the application of such assistants.

PhD thesis defense Suyi Hu

Congratulations to Suyi Ju, Hearing Research Lab (HRL), for his successful PhD thesis defense on 18 May 2021! Suyi has computed a “Bayesian Brain-Inspired Computational Modeling of Tinnitus and Residual Inhibition” as his PhD project. With this contribution he aimed to add to the so-far incomplete understanding of Tinnitus and further the development of effective diagnostic and treatment strategies.

Congratulations to Tatiana Fountoukidou, Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging lab (AIMI), for her successful PhD thesis defense on 4 May 2021! Titled Towards safer machine learning for ophthalmology applications , her PhD project aimed at providing a tool to testbed machine learning algorithms through sets of dynamic questions to help clinicians see which clinical systems they can trust before implementing them into patient care.

Clinical dietitian Maria Vasiloglou on Nutrition Hub

I believe that multidisciplinary work is fundamental to create a complete system that meets user needs, says Maria Vasiloglou, PhD student at the ARTORG AI in Health and Nutrition (AIHN) lab. In an interview with Nutrition Hub, she explains how she as a dietitian works in the lab with a team of engineers and computer scientists and in close interaction with healthcare professionals to create user-friendly technology for dietary monitoring and assessment.

A 3D in-vitro model of the lung microvasculature

Up to date, researchers mostly use 2D cell culture platforms to study the biology of the vasculature of the lung. Now the ARTORG Organs-on-Chip Technologies laboratory, in collaboration with the Max-Delbrück Center in Berlin and the Departments of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery of Bern University Hospital, has developed a more in vivo-like 3D model, which can be exposed to mechanical cyclic stretch, such as that induced by the breathing motions.

PhD thesis defense Laurent Lejeune

Congratulations to Laurent Lejeune, member of the Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (AIMI) lab, for his successful PhD thesis defense on 19 April 2021! Under the title “Annotating Medical Sequences in the Blink of an Eye: Segmenting Video and Volumetric Medical Sequences at Frame-rate using Sparse Point-wise Supervision“ Laurent Lejeune presented his research on developing a fast and intuitive annotation protocol to generate training datasets for machine learning medical imaging classification.
