ARTORG receives 3RCC Grant

Three out of four project grants by the Swiss Competence Center dedicated to the 3R principles Replace, Reduce, Refine go to the University of Bern this year. One of the grantees is Olivier Guenat, Head of the Organs-on-Chip Technologies group at ARTORG (left). Together with Thomas Geiser from the Inselspital Department of Pneumology Guenat proposes to develop a new model to study idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a fatal lung disease that results in the scarring of the lungs, to replace the so far prevalent but flawed bleomycin-induced lung-injury and lung fibrosis model. Two other projects by Christiane Albrecht and Marianna Kruithof-de Julio are likewise funded.

Daniel Abler part of Catalyst Europe 2020

Daniel Abler as member of the ARTORG Computational Bioengineering group has been selected one of 12 fellows for Catalyst Europe. Based on the Catalyst framework of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Catalyst Europe aims to accelerate and heighten the potential impact of biomedical research on health technology. Together with fellow scientists and multi-disciplinary faculty from three EU hubs and the MIT, the former Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow Daniel Abler will be evaluating unmet medical needs and define clinically applicable research projects.

SurgeonsLab wins second stage Venture Kick support

SurgeonsLab, the ARTORG Image-guided Therapies spinoff, has won stage 2 funds from Venture Kick along with two other medical technology startups. The founders Fredrick Johnson Joseph, ARTORG, and Dr. med. David Bervini, neurosurgeon at Inselspital, have created SurgeonsLab to produce patient-specific training models for trailing microsurgical procedures and interventions pre-operatively. The 4D microsurgical simulator can be used by residents and experienced neurosurgeons to achieve micro-accuracy and improve patient safety during interventions to remove neurovascular pathologies like intracranial aneurysm.

URODEA one year after its first Startup-Weekend

The ARTORG spinoff URODEA won the Startup-Weekend at the Innovation Bank Biel/Bienne last year. The business knowledge acquired there, served as a first step towards a professional business plan and a successful grant application to the Federal Agency Innosuisse. At the end of the year, the URODEA prototype, a non-invasive device for patients who are unable to urinate properly, will be tested in clinical trials, says Francesco Clavica in an interview with the Bieler Tagblatt today.

Improved prediction of bone implant stability

As part of her dissertation, Marzieh Ovesy from the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics group at ARTORG has developed and validated an explicit finite element method that can more accurately predict the primary stability of dental or orthopedic implants for surgical planning. The computational approach can simulate the insertion and primary stability of a rigid implant in a deformable bone and account for damage at the bone-implant interface, hence paving the way for improved implant design with higher stability.

PhD Defense Soheila Zeinali

Congratulations to Soheila Zeinali from the Organs-on-Chip Technologies group on her successful PhD thesis defense on 2 June 2020! She presented her thesis on “Functional in vitro Human Microvasculature”, conducted under the Co-Supervision of Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Geiser, Department of Pneumology, Inselspital, and with Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Kübler, Institute of Physiology, Charité Berlin, as external expert.

AI to tackle hospitalized malnutrition

The nutrient intake of hospitalized patients, who are at risk of disease-related malnutrition, needs to be continuously monitored. To assist hospital care personnel with this task, researchers from ARTORG's Artificial Intelligence in Health and Nutrition in collaboration with Inselspital have developed an AI-based system to automatically assess nutrient intake of inpatients. Experimental testing of the system that applies sequential food segmentation, recognition, and estimation of the consumed food volume proves promising.

Two postdocs receive UniBE Initiator Grants

The ARTORG Center congratulates two of its young researchers for having won Initiator Grants by the University of Bern to support their postdoc research projects: Serife Seda Kucur, Artificial Intelligence for Medical Imaging, and Miguel Angel Ariza Gracia, Computational Bioengineering, have received seed money in May 2020 to promote third-party funding projects into machine learning applications and tissue biomechanics for ophthalmology. Their two projects will be submitted to Innosuisse.
