Ultrasound and cilia to clean implanted stents and catheters

Ultrasound and cilia to clean implanted stents and catheters

Led by PD Dr. Francesco Clavica from ARTORG's Urogenital Engineering Group and Prof. Daniel Ahmed from the Acoustic Robotics Systems Lab at ETH Zurich, researchers have developed an innovative technology which can clean implanted medical devices such as ureteral stents and catheters non-invasively, using ultrasound activation through the skin.

AI-supported detection of cardiac abnormalities

AI-supported detection of cardiac abnormalities

A team of researchers at Inselspital led by Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Gräni, Director of Cardiac Imaging, and Dr. Isaac Shiri, Head of Research for Artificial Intelligence in Cardiovascular Medicine, has developed an AI-based tool for the detection and classification of anomalous aortic origin of coronary arteries (AAOCA) - a very rare congenital heart defect - using coronary CT angiography images.

PhD Defense: Christina Wapp Develops Fragility Hip Risk Calculator

PhD Defense: Christina Wapp Develops Fragility Hip Risk Calculator

On March 18, 2025, Christina Wapp successfully defended her PhD thesis titled: “The Development of a Personalised Fragility Hip Risk Calculator.” In this work, Christina presents a novel hip fracture risk calculator based on a mechanic stochastic framework. By combining an existing model used to describe the occurrence of a fall with a stochastic distribution, she could identify the fall events resulting in a fracture and calculate the fracture risk.
