PhD Defense: Javier Gamazo Tejero Tackles Data Limitations in Medical AI
On December 3, 2024, Javier Gamazo Tejero successfully defended his PhD thesis titled:
"Overcoming Data Limitations through Optimization: From Annotation Strategies to Real-World Application."
In this work, Javier addressed the problem of label scarcity in AI from multiple points of view, focusing on medical AI applications in ophthalmology. His dissertation proposed innovative solutions across the machine learning pipeline, including optimal budget allocation for image labeling, domain adaptation methods for semantic segmentation, and techniques for biomarker localization in Optical Coherence Tomography with minimal annotations. Beyond ophthalmology, these contributions have broader implications for other fields that also need expert annotations, emphasizing AI as a tool to complement human expertise.
Congratulations to Dr. Javier Gamazo Tejero for his impactful contributions to medical AI and beyond!
