ARTORG’s AI in Health and Nutrition Group Contributes AI Expertise to Horizon Europe Project AIRIS

AIRIS (Mechanism-Informed Multimodal Generative AI for Causal and Dynamical Modelling in Biomedical Research) brings together 21 partners from Europe, Canada, and the US to develop generative AI models that combine biomedical and clinical data, existing knowledge, and mechanistic models. ARTORG researchers will contribute expertise in causal AI, mechanism discovery, and multimodal modelling to advance AI-supported biomedical discovery and personalized medicine.

The ARTORG Center at the MICCAI 2026 Conference and Workshops in Strasbourg

The 29th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) conference took place from September 27 to October 01, 2026, at the Strasbourg Convention Center in France. Various members of the different ARTORG research groups were presenting their work at the main conference and its satellite events.

PhD thesis defense Ioannis Papathanail

Congratulations to Ioannis Papathanail for successfully defending his PhD thesis “Machine learning-based system for dietary assessment” on 26 June 2024! As part of the AI in Health and Nutrition lab, Ioannis has investigated ways to use AI technology in mobile health applications to promote dietary monitoring and assessment as a cornerstone for a healthier and more balanced lifestyle, but also to avoid malnutrition or adiposity or deal with conditions such as diabetes.

MLP Mixers in Lung Image Segmentation

The AI in Health and Nutrition lab conducted performance tests on a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for lung fibrosis, employing multi-layer-perceptron-mixers (MLP-mixers) for segmenting lung and airway anatomy. Additionally, the system identifies idiopathic lung disease patterns in a second step. Currently, MLP-mixers segmentation demonstrates performance comparable to nnU-Net on chest CT images.
