Innosuisse, the Swiss Innovation Agency, financially supports innovation projects. With its “Innovation Project with Implementation Partner” funding scheme, Innosuisse supports science-based innovation projects conducted jointly by industrial partners and private and public institutions in collaboration with a research partner.
The Bernese start-up IMPLANZ AG, which originated within the ARTORG Center’s Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Group (MSB), received an Innosuisse Innovation Project Grant for their project “Image-to-Decision Intelligence for Implant Surgery.”
With this project, IMPLANZ aims to address a key challenge in dental implant procedures: the lack of objective, data-driven, patient-specific decision support prior to surgery. Primary implant stability is a critical factor for successful healing, yet it is still largely assessed subjectively in daily clinical practice.
Today, preoperative assessment of bone quality and implant stability remains limited. While CBCT imaging is routine in clinical practice, it does not provide standardized or reliable quantitative measures of bone density across different scanners. For this reason and its high computational cost, advanced biomechanical simulations are not feasible for routine use.
The project combines CBCT calibration with AI-based biomechanical modelling to estimate patient-specific implant stability from preoperative imaging, enabling more informed treatment planning.
By integrating these capabilities into existing digital workflows, the project seeks to support more consistent and efficient clinical decision-making, with the potential to improve dental implant treatment predictability for dentists and outcomes for patients.
IMPLANZ is a start-up with a highly motivated team that is well established in the Bernese start-up ecosystem, with scientific and clinical support from the ARTORG Center and ZMK Bern. For this project, IMPLANZ serves as the implementation partner, while ARTORG’s Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Group (MSB), under the leadership of Prof. Philippe Zysset, and the ZMK Bern are involved as research and clinical partners.
