LEM Surgical is a spin-off that developed out of the Image-Guided Therapy (IGT) research group, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Weber. The company aims to improve health and well-being by advancing the field of robotic surgery, creating and commercializing a humanoid robotic platform focused on hard tissue surgery that is innovative, progressive, and valuable.
The recently published study in the North American Spine Society Journal (NASSJ) showed that by implementing bimanual surgical workflows, LEM Surgical’s Dynamis Robotic Surgical System can individually track and stabilize a specific cervical vertebra. Dynamis is an FDA-cleared humanoid surgical robotic system which comprises two primary robotic arms and a third component dedicated to navigation and tracking.
This study evaluated cervical intervertebral motion under controlled loading and investigated whether intraoperative spinal stabilization could reduce vertebral displacement during robot-assisted procedures, thereby improving pedicle screw placement accuracy. It found that the bimanual design of Dynamis, one robotic arm functioning as the working arm and the other serving as the stabilizing arm, significantly reduced pedicle screw-placement errors.
