Organs-on-Chip Technologies

From Microinstrumentation to Patient-Relevant Models

The ARTORG Organs-on-Chip Technologies group develops microengineered in vitro models of the lung, combining custom microinstrumentation with patient-derived cells. The instrumentation is developed in-house and used to reconstruct the architecture and biophysics of the lung parenchyma, producing microfluidic models for studying pulmonary disease and testing therapies. Our aim is to make these models clinically meaningful. Patient-derived cells are cultured under dynamic physiological conditions, ventilated and continuously monitored much like a patient in intensive care. From these models we work towards functional readouts that correspond to clinical endpoints: in effect, placing a stethoscope on the chip.
